However, in places like Medan, Indonesia, a significant number of children still face barriers to learning. Economic struggles, unequal access to resources, and a shortage of quality teachers affect the city. Yet, a ray of hope has emerged in the form of Rotalent, Rotary Club Medan Talenta. Established in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on workers in the arts and entertainment sectors, Rotalent has grown into a powerful force for educational change through the "Rotalent Belajar" program. This initiative seeks to transform the educational landscape in Medan, addressing urgent issues with a vision of empowerment.
Rotalent’s Mission: Commitment to Education
Rotalent believes that education is a right for every child, not a privilege. In Medan, where educational inequality is a serious issue, Rotalent is dedicated to bridging the gaps that hinder access and quality. By collaborating with local schools and community members, Rotalent strives to create opportunities that can change lives.
Research shows that Medan has one of the highest education gaps in its region, with many students lacking access to basic educational facilities. Rotalent's goal is clear: to ensure every child in Medan has access to quality education. The commitment of Rotalent's volunteers reflects a deep passion for uplifting their community, enabling every child to learn and reach their full potential.
Challenges in Education in Medan
• Inequality in Access
Access to quality education in Medan is fraught with challenges. Data from 2013 showed that around 60% of students in some districts lacked access to adequate educational resources and qualified teachers. This requires immediate action. Rotalent Belajar aims to reduce this gap by providing essential educational materials and ensuring the availability of qualified educators. By creating an environment where children can thrive, regardless of their background, Rotalent seeks to level the playing field.
• School Dropout Rates
The dropout rate among school-age children is also a significant concern. Economic challenges force many families to prioritize survival over education. In 2023, around 7,600 children in North Sumatra dropped out of school, making it the second-highest region in Indonesia for school dropouts. Rotalent understands that keeping children in school requires more than just resources. The program provides a comprehensive support system to ease the financial burden on struggling families, aiming not only to educate but also to retain students in the education system.
• Unequal Quality of Education
Access to education does not automatically guarantee quality. Variations in teaching methods, curricula, and school infrastructure lead to inconsistent learning experiences. Rotalent Belajar directly addresses this gap by offering training and resources for teachers. For example, Rotalent conducts regular workshops that equip local teachers with innovative teaching strategies, ultimately improving learning outcomes for students.

Although Rotalent's work is ongoing, numerous success stories illustrate the profound impact of the Rotalent Belajar program. For instance, children who once faced limited educational opportunities are now thriving academically thanks to the resources and guidance provided by Rotalent. In just one year, more than 300 children have re-engaged with their studies and developed a renewed enthusiasm for learning.
Rotalent’s positive reputation has also inspired greater community involvement. More volunteers are joining, offering their time and resources to strengthen the program’s impact, further enriching the educational experience for students.
Here are some of the educational initiatives carried out:
October 2022: Supported literacy culture by building smart huts and mobile libraries for the community in Bandar Selamat Village, Medan Tembung District.
January 2023: Built three new classrooms and two new toilets at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta Sidratul Ulya in Naga Timbul Village, Tanjung Morawa, North Sumatra.
September 2023: Provided dental health education and free medical treatment for students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta Sidratul Ulya, in collaboration with Royal Prima General Hospital and Prima Dental and Oral Hospital.
October 2024: Partnering with Maharani Kirana Pertiwi Foundation to support literacy culture through the Maharani Mobile Library program in Pekan Labuhan, Medan.
September 2024 – November 2024: Conducting a seven-series vocational development workshop, "Rotalent Belajar," for students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta Sidratul Ulya, in collaboration with SMLOne Human Resource Development Institute.
Action Plan

The Rotalent Belajar workshops at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta Sidratul Ulya have had a significant impact. One of the key outcomes has been an increased enthusiasm among students to pursue education, fostering greater confidence and motivation to continue their schooling.
Currently, the Rotalent Belajar program has benefited three schools in Naga Timbul, out of a total of ten schools. The program aims to reach all ten schools in the area.
Specifically, at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta Sidratul Ulya, the growing number of students has highlighted the urgent need for additional classrooms. Adequate school facilities are essential to supporting optimal learning and teaching processes.
Rotalent’s planned initiatives include:
Constructing eight new classrooms that will also function as a multipurpose hall to accommodate various student activities.
Expanding workshop programs to seven more schools in Naga Timbul, ensuring that all students in the area gain valuable new knowledge that can help them grow and develop optimally.

Rotalent understands that real change takes time and effort. The organization is focused on maintaining momentum and adapting to the evolving needs of the community. As it expands its reach, Rotalent plans to implement long-term strategies centered on educational and community resilience.
