A simple yet effective way to support wildlife: hanging water bottles in trees

By Nahid Hasan, advisor of Interact Club of Habiganj (Bangladesh)

This past May, members of the Interact Club of Habiganj in Bangladesh embarked on a unique initiative: hanging bottles of water in the trees around their homes. While this may seem like an unusual sight, it’s a practice that is gaining attention for its numerous benefits—supporting wildlife, aiding gardens, and even adding a touch of creativity to landscaping.

The Reality of Heat and Water Scarcity

With rising temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, many canals around us have dried up due to the severe heat, leaving both people and wildlife struggling to find water. Tragically, reports of heatstroke are becoming all too common, and hospitals are filled with those affected by the extreme heat. While some of us can rely on fans or air conditioning for relief, our feathered friends are left vulnerable. Urbanization continues to encroach upon natural habitats, leading to the extinction of various bird species. Month after month, there is no rain, and there is no water around to quench their thirst.

In response to this pressing issue, our Interact Club of Habiganj members are taking action. We regularly refill bottles with water and hang them in trees, creating accessible drinking spots for birds during the sweltering months. By doing this, we hope to make a positive impact on our environment and provide a lifeline to the wildlife around us.

The Benefits of Hanging Water Bottles in Trees

  1. Supporting Wildlife

In times of drought, providing a reliable water source is essential for birds and small animals. Hanging water bottles ensures that these creatures can access clean water while protecting it from contamination and ground-level predators.

  2. Micro-Irrigation for Plants

This method can also be beneficial for gardening. By watering plants directly from hanging bottles, you can ensure that moisture reaches the roots gradually, conserving water and promoting healthy growth.

  3. Pest Deterrence

The reflective surfaces of the bottles can help deter pests. The movement of the bottles in the wind and the light glimmering off the water may keep unwanted birds and insects away from fruit trees and vegetable gardens.

  4. Decorative and Functional Landscaping

Incorporating water bottles into your garden design adds a whimsical touch while serving practical purposes, such as irrigation and pest control.

Practical Tips for Implementation

  • Regular Maintenance: Keep the water fresh and clean, refilling the bottles as needed.

  • Secure Hanging: Use durable twine or hooks to ensure the bottles remain in place, even in strong winds.

  • Consider Safety: Position the bottles out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidents.

By hanging water bottles in trees around your home, you can make a significant difference. Not only do you support local wildlife and improve gardening efficiency, but you also contribute to a more sustainable environment. This simple act can enrich the ecosystem around you and offer a refreshing solution during the hottest months of the year. Let’s work together to protect our environment and give birds the freedom to thrive.
