6 ways to fight and prevent diseases in your community

Rotary members have played a key role in bringing the world to the brink of polio eradication. Our members have not only ended polio in 122 countries but also created a system for tackling a myriad of other health priorities, such as Ebola. Rotary clubs lead efforts both large and small to fight and prevent diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. Clubs also focus on prevention by providing health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.

In December, Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Month, here are six ways you can take action to fight disease in your community:

  1. Improve the capacity of local health care professionals.

  2. Promote disease prevention programs with the goal of limiting the spread of communicable diseases and reducing the incidences of non-communicable diseases and their complications.

  3. Enhance local health infrastructure.

  4. Educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the spread of major diseases.

  5. Support programs that prevent physical disability resulting from disease or injury.

  6. Support studies for career-minded professionals related to disease prevention and treatment.

Enhance your disease prevention and treatment projects: Collaborate with a Rotarian Action Group! Of the 26 Rotarian Action Groups (RAGs), which help Rotary clubs and districts design and carry out humanitarian projects, 13 focus on disease prevention and treatment. Contact an Action Group that works in disease prevention and treatment to start or expand a project in your community.

Support projects on Rotary Ideas:

  • The Cordillera is a mountainous area in the Philippines that can only be reached by a long bus ride or hike. The communities have limited or no access to medicine and health care. The Rotaract Club of Baguio SLU – School of Medicine aims to organize free medical check-ups, provide hygiene kits and raise awareness about the health needs of these communities. Support their project.

  • Many Native Americans in New Mexico, United States do not have access to basic healthcare due to poverty, travel distances, and lack of transportation. The Rotary Club of Doylestown seeks to provide a mobile health clinic to reach an estimated 3,600 individuals living in remote areas outside of Gallup, New Mexico. Partner with the club on their project that will fund healthcare equipment needed to serve Native Americans in remote areas.

  • The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Airfield in Nigeria aims to provide the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH)’s Intensive Care Unit equipment to help them better support patients. Contribute to their project.

See how our members are fighting disease on Rotary Showcase:

  • The Rotary Clubs of Bali Kuta and Bali Taman in Indonesia distributed 1000 glasses to school children with sight problems in Bali. They conducted eye screenings for 1405 at a local school and found 60 cases of kids that needed glasses.

  • The Rotary Clubs of Narayanganj Port City and Rajdhani Sonargaon in Bangladesh organized a free dental camp for children of their local school. During the camp the shared best dental hygiene practices and encouraged healthy habits with 500 students.

  • Due to a lack of awareness about menstruation, many school-going girls skip classes in India, which impacts their futures. To confront misconceptions, the Rotary Club of Baroda Sayajinagari is spreading awareness on proper hygiene during menstruation through mother and daughter workshops.
